Make A House a Home - Government's Community Grants Empty Homes programme

Finally, the Community Services team embarked on a new project in 2012/13 – funded by the Government’s Empty Homes Community Grants programme.  We have called the project Making a House a Home.  It is a partnership project between the Trust, Norwich City Council and local training company Construction Training Specialists (cts). The aim of the project is to persuade owners of long-term empty properties in Norwich to lease us their houses.  In exchange for refurbishing the properties to a good, “let-able” standard the owners agree to a sub-market lease arrangement for 5 years.  The refurbishment is undertaken by people who have experienced homelessness and who reside in supported housing in Greater Norwich.  After completing an induction course at cts they work on the refurbishments and then get a chance to compete for the tenancies they have created.  The project is funded to refurbish, let and manage 10 properties over a 3 year period.  During the period under review the project acquired its first lease from an private owner and completed the refurbishment thus creating two new tenancies in a property that had been empty for at least ten years.
