Dibden Road bees

Our hostel at Dibden Road has started a bee-keeping project. In the Summer of 2022 we welcomed 5,000 new residents to the hive in the garden of the hostel. The team and residents have worked together to make it a reality, from constructing the hives, to introducing bees, regular hive inspections, feeding the colony, harvesting the honey and making products.

We have some products ready for sale, and these are available at our Donation Station at Anglia Square, Norwich. Click on the products below for further information. If you have any questions about the products, please contact steven.dowty@stmartinshousing.org.uk

Beeswax hand lotion bars are solid bars made primarily from beeswax, along with other nourishing ingredients like oils and butters. They are designed to moisturize and protect the skin, particularly the hands, by creating a barrier that helps lock in moisture.

To use beeswax hand lotion bars, follow these steps:

Start with clean, dry hands: Make sure your hands are clean and dry before applying the lotion bar. This helps ensure that the ingredients can effectively penetrate your skin.

Warm the bar: Rub the lotion bar between your hands to warm it up. The heat from your hands will melt the outer layer of the bar, making it easier to apply.

Apply to your skin: Once the bar has softened, gently glide it over your skin. You can apply it directly to your hands or other dry areas of your body that need moisturizing. The heat from your skin will further melt the lotion, allowing it to be easily absorbed.

Massage into the skin: After applying the lotion bar, use your hands to massage the product into your skin. This helps distribute the moisturizing ingredients and promotes better absorption.

Allow it to absorb: Give the lotion bar a few moments to fully absorb into your skin. It may feel slightly oily or waxy at first, but it should quickly absorb, leaving your skin feeling soft and nourished.

Store properly: After use, store your beeswax hand lotion bar in a cool, dry place to prevent it from melting or becoming too soft.

Beeswax hand lotion bars are a convenient and portable alternative to traditional liquid lotions. They are particularly useful for people who prefer a more natural and eco-friendly skincare option, as beeswax is a natural ingredient known for its moisturising and protective properties.

Ingredients:

Beeswax, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E

Beeswax food wraps are a type of reusable and eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap or aluminum foil for food storage. They are made by coating a cotton fabric with a beeswax mixture. The combination of these ingredients creates a pliable and slightly sticky wrap that can be molded around food or containers.

To use a beeswax food wrap, you simply warm it with your hands to soften the wax coating, allowing it to adhere to itself or the item you are wrapping. The heat from your hands helps the wrap conform to the shape of the food or container, creating a seal. Once in place, the wrap cools and holds its shape, providing a protective covering.

When you’re done using a beeswax food wrap, you can wash it gently with cool water and mild soap. Hot water or harsh cleaning agents should be avoided as they can remove the wax coating. After washing, allow the wrap to air dry or pat it dry with a cloth. With proper care, beeswax wraps can last for about a year or more, depending on usage.

Overall, beeswax food wraps are a versatile and eco-friendly option for storing and preserving food. They offer a more sustainable alternative to disposable plastic wraps, helping to reduce plastic waste and promote a greener lifestyle.

Beeswax melts are a type of scented wax product used for home fragrance. They are made from beeswax, which is a natural substance produced by honeybees. When used in the form of melts, it offers several advantages over other types of waxes commonly used for scented candles and melts. Here’s an overview of why beeswax melts are considered better by many:

1. Natural and Non-Toxic: Beeswax is a natural ingredient, free from harmful chemicals or additives. It doesn’t release toxins or produce soot when burned, making it a healthier choice for indoor air quality compared to paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum.

2. Clean and Long-Lasting Burn: Beeswax has a high melting point, resulting in a slower and more even burn compared to other waxes. This means beeswax melts last longer, providing hours of fragrance without quickly dissipating or evaporating.

3. Aromatherapeutic Benefits: Beeswax has a natural, subtle honey-like scent that adds a unique character to the fragrance of beeswax melts. It blends well with essential oils, creating a pleasant and soothing ambiance. Some people believe that inhaling the aroma of beeswax can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve mood.

4. Eco-Friendly: Beeswax is a sustainable and renewable resource. Unlike paraffin, which is derived from fossil fuels, beeswax is produced by bees as part of their natural wax production process. Supporting the use of beeswax helps promote beekeeping and the conservation of bees, which are vital pollinators for ecosystems and agriculture.

5. Natural Ionizer: When beeswax is burned, it releases negative ions into the air. These ions attach themselves to airborne pollutants, such as dust, pollen, and mold spores, causing them to fall to the ground and be removed from the air. This ionization effect can contribute to better indoor air quality.

6. Easy to Use: Beeswax melts are typically sold in small, convenient shapes or cubes that can be easily placed in a wax warmer or oil burner. They melt slowly, releasing their fragrance gradually and allowing you to control the intensity by adding more or fewer melts.

Propolis is a natural resinous substance produced by bees from tree bark, sap, and other botanical sources. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including wounds, infections, and inflammation. Propolis tincture is a liquid extract of propolis that is commonly used as a natural remedy for its health benefits.

Here are some of the benefits of propolis tincture:

Antimicrobial and antifungal properties: Propolis has been shown to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which can help prevent and treat infections.

Anti-inflammatory properties: Propolis contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Immune system support: Propolis has been shown to support the immune system by stimulating the production of immune cells.

Antioxidant properties: Propolis contains antioxidants, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

To use propolis tincture, you can take it orally or apply it topically to the affected area. Here are some guidelines:

For oral use: Add a few drops of propolis tincture to a glass of water or juice and drink it. You can also take it directly under your tongue. The recommended dose is usually 10-15 drops, two to three times per day.

For topical use: Apply a small amount of propolis tincture directly to the affected area using a cotton swab or clean finger. Repeat several times a day as needed.

It’s important to note that propolis can cause an allergic reaction in some people, especially those who are allergic to bee products. If you experience any adverse reactions, stop using propolis tincture and consult with a healthcare professional.

The Propolis St Martins produces does not contain alcohol.
