People supported by St Martins have contributed to an art installation at St Peter Mancroft church in Norwich. Tim Edwards from Eastern Region Media ran a workshop to demonstrate how to make an origami envelope and hide a secret message inside it. The envelopes, are on display in the church alongside sculptor Peter Walker’s powerful installation ‘Hidden’.
The purpose of the exhibition is to invite people to uncover what lies beneath the surface of everyday life. ‘Hidden’ is a giant cube suspended from the church ceiling. On each of the six sides are patterns emerging through silhouettes revealing aspects of world culture, including history, society, mathematics and nature.
The people we support were invited to write a secret, or a thought and tuck it inside the envelope. The hidden letters might be about struggle and isolation or they might be a something about community and hope. Our group had a discussion about the sort of things they might write inside and how they might decorate the envelopes in a meaningful way. Another Norfolk based homelessness charity Herring House Trust in Great Yarmouth is bringing its Homelessness Exhibition to St. Peter Mancroft Church as part of the Hidden project. The exhibition is created and developed by members of the Lived Experience Collective at the charity. The artwork is directly inspired by the experiences and words of those who have been street homeless. The exhibition can be seen inside St. Peter Mancroft from Monday 4th August to Monday 11th August. There is also a service of thanksgiving at 5pm on Sunday 10 Aug at St Peter Mancroft Church with readings and reflections on homelessness.
