Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son

A stunning and thought-provoking screening of the Lorna Tucker film Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son was shown at Picturehouse Cinema City this week. Following the film was a panel discussion with St Martins CEO Dr Jan Sheldon and @johnbirdswords, founder of The Big Issue and chaired by Parveen Bird, Director at The Big Issue.

The film highlights stories of people who experienced homelessness, and what shone through was their humanity, their trauma and the poverty and hardships that they endured. Some of them still remain homeless, yet somehow the film offered hope – we can end homelessness in our country and we can do it soon – if there if political will.

The Big Issue offers a means of making an income and places the onus on an individual to make a living. Simon, a regular Big issue seller on Gentleman’s Walk in Norwich spoke about his experience – the loss of a job tipped him into homelessness.

We can all play our part – it costs £4 to buy the Big Issue, and nothing to smile at a person and look them in the eye.
