The Forncetts gardening club digs deep for St Martins

Members of the Forncett gardening club, Diggers and Dibblers, chose St Martins as the charity to benefit from the raffle at their quiz and chips night, raising a very welcome £233.

The event was held on December 8 at the village hall and the main raffle prize was a large hamper packed with goodies.

One of the event organisers Su Leavesley said, “On each table there was a small printed notice about St Martins in Norwich, urging anyone with a warm bed to go to later, to dig deep into their pockets – not just to win the raffle, but to support the homeless.”

The winning ticket for the beautiful hamper was drawn, followed by another ticket for a bottle of vodka. The winning ticket holder Brian reluctantly went to collect the bottle, ‘Can’t stand the stuff,’ he muttered. So a quick auction was arranged and soon another £20 found its way into the St Martin’s fund.

Su said, “We had a whale of a time, and beat our previous raffle total – we probably doubled it!”

Diggers and Dibblers, is a popular and lively club at the heart of village activities. The club offers a varied programme of specialist speakers and social activities, of which the quiz ad chips was one. The organisers displayed information about St Martins so people attending could learn more about the charity and its work supporting homeless people in Norwich and Norfolk.

Su said, “The magnificent total collected came to £233, which we happily forward to St Martins; and wish them all the best for the difficult winter months ahead.”
