Setting up home with help from The Besom Norwich

Brilliant local charity The Besom in Norwich has provided numerous packs for the people we support for when they set up a new home. When people move on from our services, they often have few possessions of their own.

Kelly Seed, Homelessness Reduction Officer for St Martins said, “The Besom is a really good resource to access for our clients. They’ve never said no, and I ask a lot!”

People can apply for The Norfolk Assistance Scheme for larger items such as white goods and furniture, but it’s the smaller things like toasters and kettles that people need as well.

“Some of the people we support have come straight from the street”, explains Kelly, “They have nothing at all, and no time or money to acquire the things they need when they move on.”

The Besom offer various start-up packs, and the ones used most often by people supported by St Martins are for setting up a new home. They also provide blinds or curtains, even altering the curtains so they fit exactly in the person’s new property.

It makes such a difference to people’s outcome. Moving on to a new place can be daunting, but if you are moving on with the means to cook and the means to eat then you look on it as a positive step forwards.

St Martins collects from Besom and delivers it to the person as they settle in. Besom takes referrals from agencies like St Martins, and others in the city, to ensure that people are receiving practical items alongside professional support.
