St Martins bags £1500 from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme

St Martins has received £1500 from Tesco to purchase new beds and bedding packs at St Martins House, the homelessness charity’s newest accommodation project.

St Martins House is a 23 bed hostel in the Thorpe area of the city. It provides high quality accommodation to people experiencing homelessness. Known as a ‘move-on’ hostel, the three storey housing project is for people who are able to live independently, whilst still receiving support from the charity’s dedicated support workers.

CEO Dr Jan Sheldon said, “This grant has made a huge difference to St Martins House. It has enabled us to purchase single beds and bedding packs for the rooms, meaning that each room is more spacious for the people we support. We take pride in offering high quality accommodation. It’s always a great moment when someone moves in and sees their room for the first time – it shows how valued they are when we can offer them a beautifully furnished room and excellent facilities.”

To boost funds for extra food and activity equipment, Tesco is introducing a £5m grant programme, in partnership with Groundwork UK, to gives people across the UK a stronger start in life.

Tesco’s Stronger Starts – previously Tesco Bags of Help and Tesco Community Grants – has already provided over £115 million to more than 65,000 projects across Britain.
