Supporting homeless people during the virus outbreak

Dr Jan Sheldon, CEO of St Martins gives an update on how we as a homelessness charity are coping with the current Covid 19 outbreak.

We are working to a detailed five level plan – currently we are on level three and preparing for the next level. Our focus is to ensure the people we support and our team members are as safe as they can be during the current pandemic.

On Friday the government asked local authorities to house all rough sleepers. Along with our partners, we have done that. As new people arrive on the streets, we are responding to their needs too. In addition to housing, these people need specialist support and we continue to provide that.

We have developed comprehensive plans for all the people who we support in the community and in our accommodation projects so we are aware of their needs and they do not feel that they are on their own.

Jan said, “We have some amazing team members at St Martins and I’m always proud of them…never more so than now.”

We have received some helpful donations of funds, hand sanitiser and other items. Coping with boredom is a challenge for some of our residents and we have an Amazon wishlist with some items that would be useful to the people we support.
